Technical Standards for Online Education and Training: A Scoping Study – May 2000

This report was commissioned by DETYA (the then Australian Government Department of Education, Training and Youth Affairs) on behalf of the EdNA Reference Committee (ERC) following the resolution at the October 1999 meeting of the ERC to establish a Standards Sub-Committee.

The purpose of the report was to provide the proposed Sub-Committee with a body of information and advice on which to base its initial activities.

The report was written by Jack Gilding of Backroad Connections Pty Ltd and is Copyright Commonwealth of Australia 2000.

The ERC Meeting on 28 July 2000:

  • Accepted the scoping report and approved its public circulation; and

  • Endorsed the recommendations in the consultant’s report, in particular 1, 2 and 3 and the principles set out in section 2.4.

This May 2000 report makes the case for the importance of technical standards in education and training. It documents achievements to date in this area; explains the various ways in which formal and de-facto standards are set; describes the various areas in which standards are important in education and training; and makes recommendations for priority activities.

Sadly the original EdNA site, its successor the Australian Information & Communications Technology in Education Committee (AICTEC) and the DETYA websites all no longer exist. The report is archived here by its author.
