This page provides an overview of various projects I have undertaken, some as part of Backroad Connections and some in a personal capacity. See also the Documents page.
Working with Phil Harrington and Jack Redpath, through Strategy Policy Research Pty Ltd, developed a unit for the School of Business and Economics at the University of Tasmania on Climate Reporting Frameworks and Policy. Jack Gilding delivered this unit to face-to-face and online students in 2024.
Jack Gilding assisted with the foundation and was Executive Officer of TREA from its inception in 2013 until its closure in 2023.
TREA was established to provide a united voice for the renewable energy industry in dealing with government and regulatory agencies and to promote the use of renewable energy in Tasmania.
The TREA website is still live as at February 2025. A number of the policy and analysis documents produced for TREA are available from the Documents page.
See this folder (bit.ly/TPPpublic) for information on this project which included the writing of a report Local Renewable Energy for the Tasman Peninsula, as well as the establishment of the Nubeena Residential Microgrid, which involved the installation of solar PV and batteries on five two-bedroom social housing units, providing residents with cheap electricity and backup power in the case of grid outages.
See the Documents section.
Jack Gilding organised this five-day ride in 2017 of a group of electric bike riders to attend the Australian Electric Vehicle Association’s national conference in Devonport.

Jack Gilding conducted the feasibility study and project managed this project.
Tastex Knitwear Inc. is a fully operational knitting mill in Glenorchy which is also an Australian Disability Enterprise. 30kW of solar PV was installed on the roof of the factory by I Want Energy.
The project cost $37,000+GST. Around $20,000 of the project cost was raised by direct donations to Tastex plus a public crowd-funding campaign through Chuffed.
The balance of the cost was met through a no-interest loan from the Corena Fund which has now been fully repaid from savings.
An investigation into the feasibility of urban based renewable energy projects based on the Waterworks Valley in Hobart.
Worked with Solar Citizens to advocate for fair treatment and reasonable feed-in tariff for solar PV in Tasmania.
