Making stuff with microprocessors – Jack Gilding

This is my current hobby, experimenting with microprocessors.

I mainly use the Arduino Web IDE with various Arduino boards (Uno, Leonardo, Mega) but have also done a bit of experimenting with ESP8266 boards, and will one day get around to trying the Raspberry Pi.

The following are the main projects I have worked on. Only HotTimer is completed and well documented yet but contact me if you would like more info.

HotTimer

Control of a 240V relay which in turn controls power to my storage hot water system.

The software displays the current time and Aurora time-of-use tariff. It can be configured to turn on the relay at all times that power is cheap, or set to one or two time periods – typically to turn on when excess solar generation is most likely with an optional overnight boost. Download the C++ code and the full documentation at https://github.com/JackGilding/HotTimer/

Ultimately I would like it to synchronise with an NTP server and report available surplus solar from the Solar Analytics API.

Remote water tank level monitoring

Uses ultrasonic sensors to detect water levels in two tanks and uses LoRA to send the data to a display module. Intended for use in remote locations where wifi is not available.

External light control:

Senses ambient light level. At night, turn on LED lights on the external steps in sequence triggered by push button or opening of gate.

One day these projects will be properly documented and I will learn to use Github.
